Welcome home….. kind of.
Since we live more than 60 miles away from our transplant facility we have to stay in the KC area for 2 weeks. Some have asked WHY?!?!? During the recovery phase of kidney transplant you have to be seen in their transplant center two times a week for labs and doctors visits. We weighed our options and decided that with Kevin’s nutritional needs of a T1 Diabetic along with healthy nutritional needs for renal care that we needed a hotel which had a kitchen. So….welcome to our home away from home for the next two weeks!!
I made a list of what he could eat and headed to the local Aldi, Walmart, and then had to fill in the gaps at the local Price Chopper (I’ve never been inside a Price Shopper before so bucket list checked off). I had to go to a couple stores because NOBODY carried Sugar Free Vanilla Pudding or any type of rotel (even generic)!! With a compromised immune system, we need to limit exposure to the outside world, so I shopped for 10 days’ worth of meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks). If you follow me on FB you know that my goal is to keep our weekly grocery budget to about $50 for the two of us. That was a little tougher this time since I had to start from scratch and get everything like butter, mustard, dressing, bread, ALL that kind of stuff that you’d normally not run out of all at once. I had to use one of the luggage carts to get the groceries into our room and I wasn’t about to make 20 trips
Our hotel normally offers breakfast but with COVID and decreased occupancy levels, none of the hotels in the area are offering the “normal” breakfast. Our hotel is at least offering a grab n go bag which has juice, muffin, yogurt, water, and fresh fruit. This is FANTASTIC for me and helps with our cost but we really need more protein in Kevin’s diet so we opted to grab bacon and eggs for the room. Do you know how long its been since I actually fried bacon?? I digress lol.
Our hotel suite is awesome and even has a working fireplace. I know it works because Kevin is cold all the time so he sat in front of the fireplace last night with a blanket while I sweat out the toxins in a tank top and shorts. The staff has been extremely accommodating in our medical needs and if ANYBODY needs to stay at a hotel in KC, I highly suggest the Residence Inn at the Plaza.
